PolyMic Slurries

What is slurry?

The conventional definition of slurry is a mixture of water and small particles of a solid. The particles are not normally suspended in the liquid.

In NDP slurries, the particles are micron sized diamond particles and the liquid can be oil or water based. Slurries have a higher viscosity than suspensions but can still be poured easily from a bottle.

The NDP trade name for micron diamond slurry is PolyMic Slurry. A range of chemistries compatible with oil or water based lapping systems are available.

NDP are leading the way in stabilised slurries where the polycrystalline diamond abrasive particles, up to a mean of 5 micron, remain suspended. In the application of lapping this leads to better homogeneity and consistency of the product and process over time.

Concentration
Concentration refers to the amount of diamond in the liquid. Slurries can be supplied in concentrations from 5 carats of diamond (1 gram) per litre of liquid to 35 cts/L (7 grams per litre). Slurries are normally sold in multiples of one litre.

Micron diamond size
Standard sizes of diamond in the slurry are available from 0-0.2 micron through to 3-5 micron; non standard sizes can also be catered for.

Polycrystalline micron slurry from the PolyMic product range in size 2-4, produced according to ANSI specifications, and for use in an oil based system can be ordered as:

PolyMic Slurry Poly 2-4 LRY OB
For Water based Poly 2-4 LRY WB

The minimum order quantity is 4 litres.

Application of Micron Diamond Slurries
Typical application examples of PolyMic Slurry are:
• Lapping of sapphire substrates prior to polishing
• Lapping of sapphire watch glass prior to polishing
• Lapping of metallic components

Advantages of NDP slurries:
• High lapping efficiency
• High quality surface texture on lapped component
• Highest quality and consistent polycrystalline micron diamond
• Cost effective
